I Carved A Picket “Captain Morgan” Sculpture From An Oak Tree

Hello, I’m a Florida sculptor/artist Gil Watson and I’ve been commissioned to create a sculpture out of an oak tree that was dying and wanted to be reduce down.

Mr. & Mrs. Rodgers of Homosassa Florida contacted me, after having seen among the different sculptures I had carved across the space. Collectively we got here up with the thought of an outdated fishing Captain. The prep needed to be completed first, which meant having a tree firm come out to chop down the tree to my specs.

The subsequent step was for me was to start the sculpting course of utilizing a chainsaw. As soon as the whole lot was roughed out I then used an angle grinder to get finer element and at last chisels for the hand-carved look.

To make the most of the additional wooden that was above the statue I carved seagulls in flight. This a part of the carving was very technical to have the seagulls seem in flight but to go away sufficient wooden in order that the integrity of the sculpture remains to be there and the birds don’t ‘take flight’ in excessive winds.

The sculpture was Christened ‘Captain Morgan’ by the house owners and he stands proudly on the financial institution of Grand Canal in Homosassa with three fish in a single hand, a lantern within the different that lights the way in which at night time.
